Pool Equipment Sizing Calculators
Everything starts with volume. Measure your pool once, then use the same number to size the pump, the filter and the turnover time.
- Pool Volume CalculatorGallons or liters for any shape, including sloped floors.
- Pool Pump Size CalculatorRequired GPM and total dynamic head.
- Pool Filter Size CalculatorMinimum filter area for sand, cartridge or DE.
- Pool Turnover Rate CalculatorHours per turnover, or GPM for a target turnover.
Which calculator do I need?
| If you want to know… | Use |
|---|---|

| What size pump do I need? | Pool Pump Size Calculator |
| What size filter do I need? | Pool Filter Size Calculator |
| How long should the pump run? | Pool Turnover Rate Calculator |
About these calculators
Pool equipment is sized from two numbers: how much water the pool holds and how fast you want to move it. Start with the volume calculator, then use the turnover time you want to find the pump flow, and use that flow to size the filter.
Bigger is not automatically better. An oversized pump pushes water faster than pipes and filters are designed for, which raises energy use and noise. A variable-speed pump sized for your real plumbing and a generously sized filter usually give the cleanest water for the least electricity.
Tips before you start
- Measure at the water line. Use inside dimensions at the water surface and depths from the surface to the floor.
- Check pipe size. Pipe velocity limits (6 ft/s suction, 8 ft/s return) often cap the flow more than the pump does.
- Read the pump curve. Flow depends on head. Match GPM and total dynamic head on the manufacturer's curve.
