About these calculators
Heating is usually the largest running cost of a pool, and most of that heat leaves through evaporation at the surface. These calculators size a gas heater or heat pump, estimate how much water and heat your pool loses, and show what a cover saves.
Gas heaters are fast and work in any weather, so they suit occasional use. Heat pumps cost more to buy but usually much less to run when the air is mild, so they suit pools kept warm all season. Either way, a cover at night is the cheapest upgrade.
Tips before you start
- Use your coolest month. Size for the average air temperature of the coolest month you want to swim, not the peak of summer.
- Cover at night. Warm water under cool night air evaporates fastest; a cover blocks most of that loss.
- Block the wind. Wind across the surface multiplies evaporation. Fences and hedges help more than you might expect.
